Lecoq: The Voyage
Neutral Mask week 2:
Monday
Le Jeu, balance the platform always. Every moment.
Nature. The mask is in the sea. The mask lands on the beach. The mask sees a forest and enters it. After the forest the mask sees a mountain and climbs it. The mask reaches the summit at 12 noon. It sees a plain with a river. The mask descends the mountain. The mask crosses the river. The mask sees the sunset.
I need to be bigger. I need to see bigger.
Tuesday
Movement: the sea has suspension, and plunging. How to land on the beach, remember the sea, and see the forest. Traverse the forest with fixed points and lines. I touch, I move with the fixed point, then I see the next thing, I move to touch. Traverse the river with le gamme. Finish and be ready for the next thing. Same timing as finishing a roll into a jump.
The hunt. The mask is in the forest when he discovers a creature. He hunts the creature. I hunted a dragon.
I put on the mask. I crouch immediately into action, darting from tree to tree. A fallen log, some branches. My forest is sparse. I do not hunt in a dense forest. I am carrying a lance. When the time is right, I step out from behind the tree and discover a fucking dragon. I throw my lance at it. It flies! It breathes fire at me, and I scramble behind some bushes, they're not enough. I go behind a tree. I dive behind some rocks, and go to another tree. I draw my bow and loose 5 arrows in succession. (precisement - Yasuyo) I do the last arrow with more precision. I step forward towards the clearing where the dragon is gasping feebly for its last breath. I drop my bow and draw my broadsword to hack the dragon's head off. My sword isn't enough so I saw it off. I pick up the dragon's head and drop the sword. I look at the head, then turn to share my expression with the audience.
Wednesday
Acrobatics
Prison break. In the cell - the mask is not in disgrace. The mask notices that the cell is open. The mask takes the decision to leave the cell. We are the architectures of the break. After, we come upon an open courtyard where there are guards on the wall aiming guns at us. The mask makes a run for the wall separating him and freedom. He climbs it. How does the mask taste freedom before escaping? It's freedom or death.
Thursday
I try the voyage again in front of Paola.
Are you in the swimming pool? You're travelling the same distance both sides. Again. Are you a laundry machine? Your rhythm is the same. What is the rhythm of nature? Again. What is your chest doing? Are you dancing? Again. Without the feet please. Again. Better. Your time is just.
After failing the sea multiple times, I continued on to the beach and the forest. Apparently, my forest is pretty urgent. There's a balance between being quotidien and urgent that's alive. I have to find it.
The next week, I did the voyage again in front of Eric and Anne, who gave me more notes:
Eric: Your forest is too real. You have to essentialize the journey. Ahhh, essentialize! Where have I heard this before?!
Anne: How old are you? You're just a boy! You can't be tired! Le Masque Jamais Fatiguee.
